A Bible Passage A Day: Proverbs 13:20

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harms. - Proverbs 13:20

Imagine that you are looking at a flight of birds who are headed in the same direction. More often than not, a flock of birds have the same intention, the same purpose, the same agenda. After all, birds of the same feather flock together.

This is also true with people. More often than not, people, regardless of age, stay together because they have something in common. Maybe, at first, in the process of knowing each other, they may still be different from one another, but in deciding to stick together, they begin to acquire the same interests and do the same activities together.

In Proverbs 13:20, God is challenging us to be wise in choosing the people we decide to be with. We need to be intentional with the people we choose to give attention to.  After all, when we are in the presence of the wise, we become wise, too. And in the presence of fools, we become fools, too.

For instance, being with a group of gossips turns us into gossip, too, because we listen to each juicy item and use it to make judgments about other people.

On the other hand, being in the company of the wise helps us to become wise, too. We learn about important things and we improve ourselves in the process.

This proverb is not only about the influence of other people on us, but also how we influence other people.

Am I a wise person to hang out with? Do people learn from my presence? Do I contribute to the improvement and values formation of the people around me? Do I let others become aware of God’s love and care through my actions?

Or do I contribute to insecurities felt by the people around me? Do I provide avenues for hatred and animosity through my presence? Do I bring out the worst qualities among the people I hang out with?

May the answers to these questions make us become more aware of how our presence influences other people.

And may the answers to these questions challenge us to use our blessings and talents to become avenues of grace, love, and compassion to the people we intentionally hang out with.
